Meatworks is a unique concept restaurant blending a full-blown Restaurant, Butchery, Deli and MeatStudio under a single roof. MeatWorks opened its door in May this year and located in Solaris Mont Kiara, just directly across of Cold Storage.

Run by a very young team headed by executive director Izzana Salleh, 23, who is also an executive director of the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) - an element of the Ninth Malaysia Plan, the NFC was part of the solution to address the food crisis, especially the shortage of beef in the country. With their farm located in Gemas, Negeri Sembilan, it is a farm to fork business.

The interior of the restaurant was very inviting, it was all cozy, classic looking with orange rustic brick wall filled with vintage artworks framed and hung along the wall.

Stacked on a double storey shop, MeatWorks has a seating capacity of up to 200.

Meatworks is a totally 100% halal joint, not even a single drip of alcohol in their menu. You must be wondering, serving quality steaks but without red wine?! No worries though, Cold Storage is just across the street, you can bring in your own alcohol with a RM 10/bottle corkage charge.

On the first floor, you'll have the Meat Studio and the open terrace Deli - perfect place for cozy private functions and cooking classes with MeatWorks professional chefs.

It's all about freshness. Walk into this beeftopia and be spoilt for the choices of fresh and aged meat at their Butchery section, all made and bred locally within Malaysia.

Going through the full halal MeatWorks menu.

As you can see from their menu, no alcohol drinks served, instead of Bloody Mary, you'll have the Virgin Mary. Their drinks are pretty expensive and we didn't know they do serve complimentary drinking water. We ended up with the peach syrup (RM 10.50), basically made of peach syrup and soda water, and Virgin Pina Colada (RM 15), it tasted weird without Malibu.

Fondant potatoes (RM 12), sautéed unpeeled potato wedges with corned beef silverside.

I just can't imagine visiting MeatWorks and not having beef steak at all. Ain't happening to me for sure! The waitress recommended us the beef fillet 220g (RM 59), apparently it's the most tender cut of the beef. I was disappointed for not getting the creamed potato mash as shown in their menu, gotten sick of the same potato wedges again.

Perfect beef fillet cooked to medium doneness, it was indeed very tender, pinkish and juicy! Lightly seasoned with brown sauce served on the side, a good steak like this doesn't need to be drowned in sauce. However, some might think it's bland without the sauce, but a good steak is actually best taken without any sauce, so you can actually savor the taste of the meat.

4 racks of milk-fed lamb (RM 55), a young lamb typically 4 to 6 weeks old, fed only on their mother's milk before ended up on this plate. The flavor and texture of milk-fed lamb is generally much finer and tender than the older lamb. You don't really get much lamb flavor from this young lamb, whereas when the sheep ages the meat becomes tougher and stronger in flavor. Most people don't like the strong, gamy flavor, but I do!

It caught me off guard when the waitress asked for the lamb's doneness, do people actually eat medium-rare lamb? Anyway, I requested it to be medium-well, but somehow, it ended up looking pretty rare to me. It was barely tasteful, felt like there wasn't any seasonings or marination at all, either that or it was meant to be cooked this way?

For something a little less meaty, you'll have few choices of sandwiches to pick from. One of it, Philly cheese steak sandwich (RM 24), with thin slices of sirloin steak topped with melted cheese, caramelized onions and wrapped in a soft sandwich bun.

MeatWorks club sandwich (RM 25), with layers of smoked chicken and seared corned silverside topped with age cheddar, Philadelphia creamed cheese, jalapeños, a fried egg and tomato slices.

Verdict: Expensive! Don't bother at all, if you're not a meat/beef lovers or if you're into strong tasting food. Most of the meats we had were cooked with very very light seasoning and marination (or maybe non at all!). Probably so that you can actually savor the taste of the meat (I guessed!). However, I do like their concept of selling fresh halal cut meats, all made and bred locally within Malaysia, I'm sure this will be a popular place for the wealthy Muslim. So, support lah the Malaysian cows!

It was a gloomy cloudy Sunday morning, we had sudden cravings for English breakfast over a beautiful open air garden filled with luscious green scenery. Jarrod & Rawlins (the brainchild of Malaysians Jarrod Chek and Denis Rawlins) was the perfect place for this occasion. Situated in a converted bungalow located in the leafy and breezy surroundings of Lorong Dungun in Damansara Heights.

With a private fine dining room, a bar upstairs with overlooking balcony and a outdoor beautiful garden surrounded by trees, Jarrod & Rawlins can accommodate many different events and parties.

As much as we wanted for a garden breakfast outside while soaking up the morning sun, it was occupied for a wedding event. Instead, we chose the airy balcony bar upstairs overlooking the bungalow's entrance.

Jarrod & Rawlins is renowned for their choices of fresh deli gourmet sausages, bacons and pork meats. You can either order ala-carte dishes from the menu itself or go frenzy customizing according to your preference via the counter.

Besides that, you'll have different choices of imported cheese, smoked salmon and huge portabello mushroom.

After a long wait, our first dish finally arrived, the J&R Fried Breakfast (RM 28), with two organic eggs sunny side up, sausage, bacons, grilled tomato, hash browns, toast bread served with coffee and orange juice. It was a very hearty tasty breakfast. RM 28 was the price paid for being lazy to prepare breakfast at home and for the added bonus of being surrounded by green trees and foliage, giving you a very 'green' nature feel to the meal - priceless!

With two slices of large toast and beautiful butter curls.

Our butter soaked toast with a perfect poked runny egg yolk surrounded by firm egg white, it was a real pleasure mopping the runny mess with the toast!

I wanted something different, gotten greedy and ordered my most expensive "breakfast" platter ever. It cost RM 12 per head for cooking, choose a side dish (mash or baked potatoes, fries, salad or coleslaw) and sauce. Then, be prepared to wait for at least 20 minutes for them to cook.

It was a meat-mania, I picked one dynamite chili sausage (RM 6.36 / RM 7.40 per 100gm), one lamb and cranberry sausage (RM 4.47 / RM 8.60 per 100gm), one grilled pork spare rib (RM 15.42), one portabello mushroom with baked cheese and bacon bits (RM 13.78 / RM 13 per 100gm), one serving of green salad (RM 8, stupid me for not reading the fine prints, "choose a side dish"), and a huge serving of mashed potatoes. It was a crazy breakfast and the damage in total cost RM 60.

The dynamite chili pork sausage was indeed spicy and flavorful. The lamb and cranberry sausage without the overpowering 'lamb' taste and a hint of sweet cranberry in it, but I was expecting for a stronger juicy 'lamb' and cranberry tastes in it. Mushroom was goooodd, piping hot cheese all melted into the glorious mushroom with bacon bits in it, expensive since it shrank in size after cooking. The mashed potatoes was rich and smooth. The best of all, the grilled pork spare rib, it was mind blowing tender, juicy with smoky sweet caramelized flavor.

No better way to end a perfect meal and kicked start a gloomy Sunday with a cup of warm aromatic strong coffee. I was absolutely stuffed and having a good breakfast like this lasted me till dinner for that entire day!

Verdict: Costly but a worthwhile experience once awhile for poor slaves like me. In return, you'll get to enjoy a 'slow' relaxing comfortable dining experience.

PJ Old Town is one of the earliest and oldest township in Petaling Jaya. Close to embarking upon a 30 years history, the food court located in the heart of PJ Old Town has stood the test of time and are still considered one of the best authentic hawker foods around.

One of it, Gerai Seong Kee No.35, well known for their authentic Hakka specialties such as the Hakka yong tau foo, curry fish head, assam fish, Hakka cha yuk (stew fried pork), pork leg in sweet vinegar and Hakka abacus beads.

Previously featured by Axian from the "Taste with Jason 阿贤人情味" Astro show and ever since, it gets a little crowded and more expensive :(

Hakka yong tau foo (RM 1/piece!), to maintain its freshness, most of the yong tau foo are made on the spot upon ordering. Just like any other good and famous yong tau foo, you can taste the fresh springy fish paste used.

For the non deep fried yong liew (stuffed fish paste), it'll be served in a tasty clear soup and garnished with chopped scallion.

Pork trotter in sweet vinegar (RM 12), cooked in sweet black vinegar and ginger, with a sweeter side and a hint of sourish spicy from the vinegar and ginger. It was perfect with rice, just the way I like it, the gravy was very strong in taste! However, the meat was bony and way too fat for me, hardly get any decent tender meat out from it.

Hakka cha yuk (RM 9), a typical Hakka dish with cubes of fried fatty pork belly stewed in Hakka nam yue (fermented red bean) sauce and crunchy black fungus. Too fattening for me, this dish just screams "heart attack"!

Authentic ais kacang (RM 2) from a stall nearby to Seong Kee, perfect to beat the heat under a sweltering hot day lunch. Unlike the modern fancy colorful diabetic ais kacang (yuck!), this ais kacang was only coated with simple brown sugar and coconut milk which give a pleasant sweetness to the smooth ice shavings. Underneath the ice mountain, you'll find generous serving of fragrant fried peanuts (not the instant salted packed type), cincau (black grass jelly), cendol, sweetened red beans, corn and atap chee (atap seed) - oops! too good till I've actually forgotten to snap a picture of what's inside and it reminded me on how ais kacang really tasted long before.

Verdict: Seong Kee's food taste is authentically decent but personally, I do too find it authentically expensive for hawker food standard.
