Restoran Makanan Mr. Claypot @ Taman Desa Aman, Cheras

This is probably one of the best claypot chicken rice I had ever tasted - compare it with the other popular ones such as Restoran Koon Kee at Damansara Jaya, Hong Kee at Petaling Street and Restoran Gafan at Cheras. I have yet to try Huen Kee at Pudu, Choong Kee at Damansara Jaya and the original ones in Kampar.

Restoran Makanan Mr. Claypot aka Restoran Makanan Teow Chew is located in Desa Aman, Cheras, not too far off from Cheras Business Centre at Taman Yulek.

Apart from serving world-class claypot chicken rice, this place offers pretty decent Teow Chew porridge that goes well with flavorsome side dishes such as stewed duck, braised tofu, braised pig intestines, salted egg, steamed minced pork, etc.

Every time I am here, I will only go for the claypot chicken rice with salted fish and egg combo (RM 13 for two person). Unlike its counterpart, this claypot chicken rice has anchovies in it together with some tender chicken meat, chinese sausage and spring onion.

Not to forget that the egg and salted fish are ordered separately. From the look of it, the salted fish is probably steamed with ginger and I usually mashed them up before mixing it into the claypot.

As you mixed the rice up and you will notice that how easy the bottom layer of crispy rice comes out. Mr. Claypot definitely has gotten the right combination of sesame oil, light and dark soy sauce, the rich toasty aroma of the freshly cooked rice and the slight crunchiness texture of the rice. How can we not trust the God of Eatery (not me :P), Tou Tou from HongKong - even the God himself had visited this place before.

As you can see, the crispy layer of rice underneath comes out easily. The charred rice do not taste entirely burnt at all, in fact it tasted like soy sauce which is slightly sweet and flavorful. No idea how but I believed they must have drizzled a dash of sesame seed oil and soy sauce at the bottom of the claypot with some state-of-the-art technology.

This place is big and clean enough, service is fast with high-tech PDA gadget to take down your orders efficiently.

Verdict: This is what I call a good claypot chicken rice! Others, please siam aside...

Whenever we talk about bibimbap, this is the place we would go. It is halal and it serves bibimbap, kimchi, jajangmyeon, omelette pancake, bulgogi, etc. but except for bbq. This restaurant is located inside Ampang Point and surprisingly, it is not featured anywhere at all.

Usually, I will order my dol sot bibimbap (RM 13.00), which stands for stone-pot mixed rice. The bowl is sizzling hot and it can last till you are done eating, so careful of not touching it. It is usually served with namul (sautéed and seasoned vegetables), raw egg and minced meat (either beef or chicken).

Most of their main course comes side dishes such as kimchi, sautéed and seasoned vegetables, soup and complimentary free flow of rooibos tea.

Not to forget mixing the gochujang paste into the bibimbap to enhance the flavor. This reddish paste is made of fermented soybeans and red pepper. It has a rich sweet piquant flavor and not spicy at all. I usually do 4-5 spoonfuls of gochujang paste into my bibimbap for the extra umph!

Before the rice is placed in the bowl, the bowl is coated with sesame oil. This creates a slight layer of golden crispy rice, and when mixed quick enough with the others, it gives a kind of fragrance and crispiness to the dish.

Another popular and favorite Korean dish of mine would be the jajangmyeon (RM 12) - wheat noodles topped with a thick sauce made of chunjang (a salty black soybean paste), diced potatoes and sliced raw cucumbers.

This restaurant is on the 2nd floor of Ampang Point, next to Taiwan House restaurant and same floor with Popular Bookstore.

Verdict: Highly recommended place for dol sot bibimbap! Tasty and value for money with big generous portion.

Kou Xiang Klang Bah Kut Teh @ Taman Connaught, Cheras

No doubt this is one of our preferred place to go whenever we have cravings for bah kut teh. This hidden bah kut teh joint is used to be at Restoran Mexim Connaught and only recently shifted to Kafe Eastern Oriental, next to BHP station at Taman Connaught.

We usually order the pork ribs, soft bone ribs and some intestines combo in a claypot. Smell the wonderful rich overwhelming aroma and feel the vigorous absolutely tender meaty taste. Do not look for mushrooms, vegetables or any of those pampered things...for there is none. It is just meat all the way in a rich soup with reasonably strong hint of herbs.

And of course, bah kut teh is never complete without lots of chopped garlic and chili padi with dark soy sauce!

We've also added tau pok (bean curd) and yau char kwai (deep fried crullers) as our side dishes.

You know its true that your food will never go wrong if they serve it right next to a long kang (drain).

Verdict: If you live in Cheras and have cravings for good bah kut teh...You don't have to go to Klang, just drop by this place and give it a try. By the way, all the pictures were taken while they were located at Restoran Mexim Connaught.

Frontera Bar & Grill @ Jaya One, Petaling Jaya

We decided to give Frontera a try after-all the food bloggers were frenziedly talking about it. Frontera is located at Jaya One, opposite of Halo cafe and Brussels Beers cafe. Frontera serves authentic Tex-Mex delights - a term given to food based on the combined cultures of Texas and Mexico.

I had the Beef Enchiladas (RM 28.95), which is a corn tortilla rolled around tender beef fillings topped with cheese, Mexican chili sauce and served with refried beans and Mexican rice. It is rich and flavorful but the price is a little steep for my liking.

The next dish was the Tex-Mex Chicken Burrito (RM 19.95), filled with minced chicken, topped with loads of cheese and also served with refried beans and Mexican rice. The skin of the burrito is slightly thicker than usual and it felt like eating popiah skins. Personally, I prefer enchiladas more than burrito.

In case you wonder what the heck are refried beans? Refried beans is a dish of cooked and mashed beans. Apparently the name refried is based on a mistranslation. In Mexican Spanish, the prefix re- is an informal meaning for "very" or "well", not to be confused with the English re-. Hence, refried beans = "well-fried beans", not "twice fried beans" ;)

The last dish that we were looking forward for was the Habanero Hot Wings (RM 16.95). How can we step out of this place without embracing the spiciness of Habanero chili. Habanero is one of the most intensely spicy species of chili peppers and these wings are simply soaked in it. Yeah right..! So we took the Super Hot in terms of spiciness level - they come in Mild, Hot or Super Hot.

I took a bite, it actually tasted quite appetizing like Tabasco sauce...wasn't that spicy at first but the intense builds up after few more bites and it is quite addictive! One thing for sure, my ass will be burning hot in my next toilet trip.

Apart from the food, Frontera also serves one of the best tequilas in town - 100% made from the agave plant. Cheap tequilas sold elsewhere are usually mixed with other craps, which is why they drink it with salt and lime to mask it. 100% agave tequilas are usually smooth and you got to savor it like red wine.

On the whole, the food wasn't particularly memorable for me even though Frontera is touted as the place in town to go for authentic Tex-Mex food. But I might still drop by next time to sample the rest of the menu like the BBQ Beef Ribs, Frontera Cheese Burger, Chimichanga and of course their tequilas!

Verdict: Can't really comment based on first visit. Enchiladas is good though but pricey! It is still a pretty decent hangout place for good tequilas and snacks.
